Wankaner :http://travel247.tv/india/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/Wankaner-City-Rajkot.jpg

As Indian states go, Gujarat has a long way to go before becoming tourist friendly. It may be the homeland of many a global Indian (the Patel clan comes from there), but it’s lacking in some of the things that draw tourists, namely the Taj Mahal and alcohol. Nevertheless, as Gujarat borders on Maharashtra, we decided to pay a weekend visit. Mind you, we didn’t go to the cities like Ahmedabad (home to Gandhi’s erstwhile ashram) or even to Surat. Instead, we flew into Rajkot and drove an hour to the village of Wankaner, a dusty, but bustling village and home to the Wankaner Palace. Like most former Raj palaces, Wankaner has tried to position itself as a heritage hotel.

Situated at a distance of 5 kilometers from the heart of the city, Dandi in Surat is a center for the production of salt and is of historical importance to all the Indians. Owing to its significance in the history of Indian Independence struggle, the region has become one of the chief Surat tourist attractions. Beckoning the history of the Indian independence struggle would rekindle the historic act of civil disobedience started in Surat. The famous Dandi March was launched in this region by Gandhiji and his followers in the year 1930. The taxes levied on salt were imposed by the British in the year 1930. To refute the imposition of taxes in the region, the Dandi March was launched. In the early months of spring in the year 1930, 78 dedicated followers along with their leader, Gandhiji, marched 241 miles from the Sabarmati Ashram to the salt center in the remote hamlet of Dandi. The apparent purpose of the march may have been to protest against the levying of salt taxes, the underlying purpose was to start the non-violent civil disobedience act that would root out the British Empire from their colonial rule in India. The breach of law by the Dandi March was the primary salvo directed to the yoke of the British Empire. The small coastline hamlet of Dandi in Surat has been established as a center of historical importance. The visit to this small hamlet is quintessential for those who desire to relive and learn about the history of India.

Janmashtami or Gokulashtami

Janmashtami or Gokulashtami (Shri Krishna Janmots

This is one of the famous songs that people sing on the occasion of Janmashtami, the birth anniversary of Lord Krishna the eighth avatar (Incarnation) of Lord Vishnu. This religious festival is celebrated all over India in the month of August/September on the ashtami of Krishna Paksh or the eighth day in the month of Bhadon according to the Hindu calendar with great devotion and zeal. Janmashtami is also known as Gokulashtami, Krishnasthami, Srijayanti. The Janmashtami of Mathura and Vrindavan, the places where Lord Krishna had spent his childhood, are famous all over the world. Devotees from across the world come to these pious places to celebrate Janmasthami. On this auspicious occasion, temples and homes are beautifully decorated and illuminated. Night long prayers are offered and religious hymns are sung in temples. The priests chant holy mantras and bath the idol with Panchamrit which comprises of Gangajal (water from the holy Ganges River), milk, ghee (clarified butter), curd, and honey pouring all these from a conch shell. After this bath the idol of the infant Krishna (also known as Balmukund) is placed in a cradle. Devotional songs and dances mark the celebration of this festive occasion all over Northern India. The temples especially in Vrindavan witness an extravagant and colourful celebration on this occasion. Raslila is performed to recreate incidents from the life of Krishna and to commemorate his love for Radha.Krishna Janmashtami, also known as “Krishnashtami”,”Saatam Aatham” ,”Gokulashtami”, “Ashtami Rohini”, “Srikrishna Jayanti”, “Sree Jayanthi” or sometimes merely as “Janmashtami”, is a Hindu festival celebrating the birth of Lord Krishna, an avatar of the Hindu deity Vishnu. Krishna Janmashtami is observed on the Ashtami tithi, the eighth day of the dark half or Krishna Paksha of the month of Shraavana in the Hindu calendar, when the Rohini Nakshatra is ascendant. The festival always falls within mid-August to mid-September in the Gregorian calendar. In 2009, for example, the festival was celebrated on the 14th of August, while in 2010, the festival will be celebrated on 2nd of September. Rasa lila or dramatic enactments of the life of Krishna are a special feature in regions of Mathura and Vrindavan, and regions following Vaishnavism in Manipur. While the Rasa Lila recreates the flirtatious aspects of Krishna’s youthful days, Govinda Pathaks or Dahi Handi celebrate the God’s playful and mischievous side, where teams of young men form human pyramids to reach a high-hanging pot of butter and break it.

Champaner Pavagadh

Champaner Pavagadh

Champaner Pavagadh Archaeological Park The site was declared a world heritage site in 2004. Champaner Pavagadh Archeological Park is known for housing a number of archaeological and historic sites that are yet to be excavated along with living cultural heritage structures. The sites include a hill fortress of an early Hindu capital from the 16th century in the state of Gujarat complete with palaces, temples, residential precincts, agricultural structures and water installations. These structures belong to the period ranging from 8th to 14th centuries. Thousands of pilgrims flock throughout the year to the Kalikamata Temple atop the Pavagadh Hill to pay their homage to the Goddess. The site is quite important to study the pre-Mughal Islamic history, as it is the only complete city from that time that hasn't been altered later.

One can see ancient Hindu palace and temple architectural styles, the special water retaining installations of that time that were used to fight off the scarcity of water and the religious, military and agricultural structures that befit the 16th century capital of the region built by Mehmud Begda. These structures help to fill the gaps in Indian history and present a harmonious blend of Hindu-Muslim architecture. The Great Mosque or the Jami Masjid is believed to have served as the model for the mosques built later in India and is representative of regional sultanates that existed before Mughals came into power. The capital was not used for long. It is place of worship for Hindus and presents pregnant historical mysteries to the arche

> Sri Somanath Temple

Sri Somnath temple is known as the Eternal Shrine as it has withstood the shocks of time and the attacks of the destroyers. Situated in Prabhas Kshetra in Saurashtra at 79 kms from Junagadh and 25 kms from Chorwad on the western cost of Gujarat, it was the most revered shrine having one of the twelve pre-eminent Jyothirlingas.

There are several names for Somnath acquired during long history as Deo Pattan, Prabhas Pattan, or Pattan Somnath. This temple has glorious legend and history. Its reference can be traced in Rig Ved also. This temple facing east once had a large central hall with three entrances.

There are richly carved doorways with sculptured representations of Nandi, and figures of many goddesses and female attendants. A mutilated form of Nataraja, the dancing Shiva can be seen in the balconied corridor.

The legend says that Somraj, the moon god, built this Somnath temple originally in gold. The Moon or Soma with his wife Rohini worshipped the deity “Sparsha Ling” of the temple to free himself from the curse of his father-in-law, Daksha Prajapati. Lord Shiva pleased with his penance restored his light for half of the month. Hence the deity here is known as Someshwar or Somnath, Lord of the moon and the place is called as the Prabhas. Later, Ravana rebuilt the temple in silver. Then again Lord Krishna rebuilt it in wood. Krishna was hurt here at Bhalka in his foot by the arrow of a hunter who mistook him to be a deer.

There is Bhalkha Tirth temple at this sacred place. The mortal remains of Krishna were cremated at Dehotsarga, on the banks of river Hiren. The temple was again built by King Bhimdev Solanki in stone in the 10th century. The temple was very rich and courted over 300 musicians and 500 dancing girls. On hearing the description of the temple by Arab traveler Al Biruni, the Mahmud of Ghazni raided the temple in 1024 A.D and looted it carrying way the loads of jewels and gold on many camels. Each time the Somnath temple was destroyed, it was rebuilt again and again.

In 1706 A.D., it was demolished by the Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb. The present temple was rebuilt for the seventh time on the original site in 1950 A.D., with the support from Sardar Vallabhabhai Patel who was the first Deputy Prime Minister of India and was called as the iron man of India. Its reconstruction was completed on December 1st 1995 and the then president of India, Dr. Shankar Dayal Sharma dedicated it in the service of the nation.

The present temple referred as Kailash Mahameru Prasada is built by Shree Somnath Trust which looks after the entire complex of Shree Somnath and its environs. The temple has Chalukya style of temple architecture reflecting the inherent skill of Sompuras, the Gujaraj’s master masons. There are the Shikhar portion, the Garbh Gruh, the Sabha Mandap and the Nritya Mandap in the temple. The Temple is situated at such a place that there is no land in between from Somnath sea-shore to Antartica, the South Pole.

The inscription in Sanskrit can be seen on the arrow-pillar erected on the sea protection wall of Somnath temple. The places around the temple include Prabhas Patan Museum with art treasures, and the Somnath beach with pleasant sands. There also other famous places such as the Bakhla Tirth, the Triveni Tirth, Surya Mandir, Ahilya Mandir and Veraval beach near the temple.

Lothal:

Lothal:
History dates back to Indus Valley Civilization which leave behind the ruins of Lothal, the first Indian Port between 1800-2400 BC. It also shows a very high degree of town planning, like other sites in the Indus valley.

The discovery of seals at Lothal suggests that the former civilization from this part of the Indian subcontinent traded frequently with the ancient civilizations of Mesopotamia, Egypt and Persia. An unusual discovery was made here of two bodies found in a single grave. At least three such instances show that double burial was a common feature among the people who lived in Lothal. More than 4000-year-old seals of the Indus Valley and Sumerian civilizations, terracotta artefacts, ancient beads and necklaces made from colourful semi-precious stones, resembling modern day junk jewellery, among others is being brought alive in the minds of the people by the Archeology survey of India. Thus, Lothal is an emerging Tourist attraction in Gujarat.
